Archive August 2008 As always, many great things have been happening with BRB this past month! Despite high gas prices and being the longest distance members of BRB, Nick and Ken Larsen made their way to the July launch at the landfill, where Ken made a successful level 2 flight, on a very hot July afternoon. Photos are on the website home page and in the images section. Congratulations to Ken! While the First Flyers project has officially ended, the outreach team members were still hard at work and they held two events in July not counting the regular monthly launch. On July 10th at Gibson Elementary School, they picked up the last 13 First Flyer names at a launch / demo for the school's summer program. Then again on July 26, Kim and Ron manned a booth at a Math and Science Fair for over 200 Birmingham City School students. The thank you note from the Fair organizer was glowing. Photos of these events are on the website. George Gassaway spent a week at NARAM 50 and he let me know NAR will be making several announcements by the end of August for things like Section of The Year, First Flyer, etc. At this time and a full week after the First Flyer project was officially over, BRB is posted on the NAR website as being 423 names ahead of the next closest Section. George is also going to Spain for the International Model Rocketry Competition right after the August BRB launch. We want to wish George good luck in Spain and a safe trip! I'm sure the photos he brings back will be outstanding. Regardless of what happens with the First Flyer postings, BRB has had a spectacular year serving this community. BRB is considered one of the smaller Sections in NAR and all those that have helped in any way have to be very proud of what has been accomplished. I know I am! As president, I want to thank every single one of you for the sacrifices that have been made to assist students and teachers across our area. I'll have a bit more to say about BRB Outreach when the dust settles later this month. Nite Flight... Don't miss what will be 665's longest launch day ever, and our first night launch ever, on August 16th at the landfill. We will hold our regular monthly launch as usual, then follow it up with a twi-light/night launch from 7:30-9:15. If you will be joining us that evening please visit the BRB discussion board at: click here for launch schedule, rules, tips and suggestions for this special launch. NAR News... Just in case you might have missed it, the NAR has a new president, Trip Barber. Trip spent the last 14 years serving as V.P. of NAR and has more than 45 years of flying experience. Over the last few years I have exchanged several emails with Trip on a number of subjects and I have been impressed with his pleasant and positive demeanor, his knowledge of the hobby, speed of response, and accuracy on the issues we have discussed. I believe Trip will be an excellent president. Randy |
